The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra is looking for devotees of the universal language – music – for the 16th annual Lieutenant Governor’s NBYO Award.

The Award, presented to deserving musicians, instructors, members, patrons or volunteers from across the province and beyond celebrates the musical development of youth and the orchestral community in New Brunswick, Don Matheson, Chief Operating Officer for the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, said.

The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra created the NBYO awards in 2006 to celebrate the orchestra’s 40th anniversary.

The award is presented each year during the NBYO concert season following nominations and upon the recommendation of the NBYO Awards Committee.

Mrs. Lucinda Flemer, founder of Kingsbrae Garden and KIRA Amphitheatre was recognized in 2022 for her unwavering support for young musicians by Honourable Brenda L. Murphy, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick.

Mrs. Flemer, a vocal ambassador for students, NBYO and Sistema NB, has constructed a world-class performing arts venue with the help of the Province of New Brunswick and Government of Canada at the KIRA Amphitheatre. Musicians are calling the facility the top outdoor venue in Atlantic Canada.

Previous award recipients included Muriel and Robert Buckley, who encouraged and supported their seven children as members of the NBYO at the same time; David and Sonja Adams, recently retired from Symphony New Brunswick, distinguished NBYO faculty and two of the founding members of the Saint John String Quartet; and Don Bosse, music teacher/band director at Fredericton High School who lead an extremely successful band program and is revered in Fredericton and beyond for his prolific jazz performances.
